At My Mothers Table
A Miniature Celebration of Food, Culture & Nostalgia.
Dolls houses have always been a great way of recording the past and the present; how we lived then and how we live now. In anticipation of our Summer Show (Kensington Dollshouse Festival May 15th & 16th) and our participation in London Craft Week, we would love you to join us at the Museum of the Home, a place which perfectly reflects so much of what our miniature world its about; understanding how we live and what it is that makes us human.
We are pleased to present the incredible work of artist Alice Hewitt, ‘At My Mother’s Table’ as well as miniature inspired canapés by Lola Brandelli and an art class with David Ward for all budding miniaturists out there. Please read more below & we look forward to seeing you there.
At My Mother’s Table
The culmination of two years work by Margate based Miniaturist Alice Hewitt.
“Using kitchen tables as a storytelling device, I explore childhood, nostalgia, food, memory, and world culture. I am fascinated by the way so much emotion is tied up with our own culinary history, not just the foods we associate with our culture, but at a deeply personal level within our own homes.
In my home we gather around the kitchen table that once belonged to my grandmother. If that table could talk it could tell many stories about our family. It could tell you about the delicious meals we cooked and the culinary disasters it presided over. It could tell you about the hours of homework, and the heated arguments between myself and my siblings. It saw us through Christmas’ and birthday parties and sicknesses and cake baking and Easter bonnet making, tears, laughter, a lot of love, and all aspects of family life.
It had a story before us, before it landed in our kitchen it belonged to my grandmother Dorothea, and my father and his siblings oriented their own lives around it. It will have a story after us too.
Kitchen tables are where families gather, to break bread and share stories. With this project, I talked to friends, family, strangers, and some well known food writers, about the tables they grew up with in their kitchen and the food they remember eating as children. The stories that I was trusted with spanned cultures, religions, class, and generations, but every family had a story about coming together around a table.”
Dolls House inspired Canapes by Lola Brandelli.
A canape should capture the essence of a dish in one small bite. Lola Brandelli, creator of ‘Canape Heaven’ Supper Club is the expert in creating miniature mouthfuls, full of remarkable flavours. She will be designing some special dolls house inspired canapes for us, that will bring back memories of favourite dishes from the past.
Miniature Art Class with David Ward.
David Ward is a London based miniaturist who has been creating all kinds of incredible tiny replicas for the past 40 years. His love of dolls houses began when he stumbled across the famous Kristin Baybars Shop in Gospel Oak and was instantly caught up in the magic of this secret place. David will be holding a miniature art class where you can create your own miniature cake on a tiny china plate made by Alice.
