POLLOCKS TOY MUSEUM AT HOXTON HALL: Had a fantastic morning at @hoxtonhall where @pollockstoymuseum were having a pop up exhibition as part of Open House week. Pollocks museum had to move out of their central London home of 50 years back in January & their incredible collection is currently in storage while they find a new home. Pollocks actually was based in Hoxton Street for around 50years (at the 1st half of the last century) so it would be great to have them return to this part of the world permanently. The morning finished off with a performance of a play, Jack & the Giant Killer, that had been one of my favourites growing up & I found that I still knew the play word for word. Good luck with finding a new venue for this special collection of toys. #toytheatres #victoriantheatres #eastlondon

YOUNG V&A : A Museum for Children or a Museum about our Childhood?

I am lucky enough to live a 15 minute bike ride from the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood (now re-named the Young V&A) so when it closed for a refurbishment 3 years ago, I was concerned that the character & purpose of the museum maybe lost. I was not in London when the museum re opened in July, but I did catch up with Curator Will Newton, to find out more about this exciting new design.

I was concerned that the museum would be turned into a giant indoor play centre, rather than looking at childhood through the ages & showing how this has changed. The museum also has an important collection of dolls houses dating from 1673 & as a dolls house lover I wanted to find out if these would still be available to view.

Will did a great job reassuring me & you can read the full interview with him on our NEWS page of the website.

Since writing this, I have visited the museum in person & I am less convinced. Although the refurbishment of the building was beautiful & I liked the way they had a section of the museum directed not at toys but items that you would find in the ‘Grown-up’ V&A in Kensington but with particular interest to children, their amazing collection as a whole just did not seem to be represented. They have a huge collection of not only dolls houses but dolls, toys, children’s clothes & equipment etc & this was barely to be seen, with the content being mainly from the 1950’s onwards & lots of space & games for the young visitors to play. Only around 10 of their collection of 100 dolls houses were on display.

I am not convinced that this museum should be about entertaining children (though of course you want children to enjoy their visit), as much as spotlighting the toys & games of former generations & allowing us all to go back in time to our own childhood for a couple of hours.

LDF AUTUMN ONLINE SHOWCASE - Day 7: Last Chance

We have really enjoyed organising our online showcases over the last 3 years & hope you have enjoyed them too. We have found that many people; collectors & craftsmen, who otherwise would not be able to travel to London, have been able to be part of our shows. This is why we feel it is important to carry on with our online event every autumn.

However, this is the last day of the showcase 2023, so your last chance to see these amazing artisan’s work all together in one place. Here are a few things that have caught our eye over the last week.

1: Carol Cook @carolcook_miniaturist always creates some beautiful images for the showcase. Take a look at her perfect tomatoes & other vegetables, all of which would get a 1st place certificate at the village show.

Dolls houses & miniatures used to be about 1:12 scale replicas only, other scales did not really exist until recently, but now, we have work in many sizes at our shows & some makers who specialise in the small scales. If you are fan of the very tiny, here are a few exhibitors to look out for.

1: House of Wonders @ahouseofwonders 1:44 scale Farmhouse. 1:12 scale for 1:12 scale!

2: Wendy’s Miniatures @wendysminis As well as her incredible natural history specimens, Wendy also has some beautiful estate pieces available like this 1:24 (half inch) scale furniture by Sue Hamlin.

3: Maria’s Miniature Trees. Not only beautiful trees designed by interior designer Maria Bevill, but she also has a range of other festive decorations (inc Halloween)
